Why I Started This Journal: Stories, Traditions & Gathering Well

Whether you’re planning a baby shower in Nocatee, hosting friends for a summer gathering in Ponte Vedra, celebrating a milestone in St. Augustine, or simply looking for inspiration for your next event, I’m so glad you’re here.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved creating beautiful spaces, bringing people together, & finding joy in the little details that make a gathering feel special. When I launched Black Fig & Collection this past year, I envisioned creating elevated charcuterie boards + grazing experiences that would help make hosting easier, more beautiful, & a little less overwhelming.

What I didn’t anticipate was how much this journey would shape me +, most importantly, teach me about people.

Recently, I was setting up a grazing table for a graduation celebration. Like many events, I arrived onsite well before the guests were scheduled to arrive. I spent the next hour + a half in the heart of my client’s home: the kitchen. As I arranged cheeses, styled florals, + added the final touches to the table, life was unfolding around me.

My sweet client & her children were gathered nearby putting up graduation signs. There was laughter, storytelling, & the familiar hustle + bustle that comes before guests arrive. Their daughter was graduating, family members were coming in, last-minute decorations were being adjusted, & everyone seemed to be moving in a dozen directions at once.

It was beautiful in the most ordinary way.

As I stood there, I found myself thinking something I’ve come to realize over + over again this past year: the heart of every home really is the kitchen.

Not because that’s where the food is.

Because that’s where people end up.

It’s where stories are shared. It’s where someone inevitably leans against the counter & starts telling a story. It’s where laughter gets a little louder. It’s where people connect.

One of the unexpected gifts of this business has been the opportunity to witness those moments up close. When you invite me into your home or venue, I’m often there long before the first guest arrives. I get to see the preparation, the anticipation, the excitement, the last-minute details, + all the love that goes into creating a meaningful gathering.

Almost every time I leave an event, I call my husband on the drive home & tell him the exact same thing:

“I think this client might be my new favorite person.”

The funny thing is, I genuinely mean it every single time. I’ve been incredibly blessed in that regard.

Because, what I’ve discovered over this past year is that the people behind these celebrations are what make this work so meaningful.

The mother planning a baby shower who simply wants everything to feel special. The family gathering for a milestone birthday. The bride taking a deep breath before she walks down the aisle. The realtor celebrating a new chapter with clients who have become friends.

While charcuterie boards + grazing tables may be what first bring people to Black Fig & Co., they are rarely what stay with me.

What stays with me are the people.

The food becomes part of the backdrop, but the real story is always the same: people making space for one another.

In a world that often feels rushed, I’ve been reminded time + time again that people still crave connection. They still gather around kitchen islands. They still invite friends over for no particular reason. They still show up for one another during life’s biggest milestones + smallest moments.

That’s what inspired this Journal.

This space is for the hosts, the planners, the memory-makers, & especially the women carrying more than most people realize.

The women balancing work schedules, school calendars, sports practices, family obligations, travel plans, grocery lists, text messages, + everything else that comes with caring for the people they love.

The women who want to create beautiful experiences but don’t always have endless hours to make it happen.

I see you because, so often, that’s me too.

My hope is that this Journal becomes a place you can return to for inspiration, practical ideas, local recommendations, entertaining guidance, + gentle reminders that hosting doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.

At Black Fig & Co., we’ve always believed that luxury isn’t about excess.

It’s about intentionality. It’s choosing quality over quantity. It’s creating spaces where people feel welcomed, comfortable, + cared for.

That philosophy influences everything we create, from our grazing tables to the stories shared here.

In many ways, this Journal is simply an extension of everything I’ve learned, appreciated, + grown to love throughout this first year in business.

You’ll find hosting inspiration, seasonal ideas, behind-the-scenes stories, local recommendations, celebrations worth remembering, + reflections from a front-row seat to some of life’s most meaningful gatherings.

My hope is that you’ll leave feeling inspired, not to do more, but to gather more intentionally. To celebrate more often. To worry a little less about perfection. To pull up an extra chair. To linger around the kitchen island a little longer. To create space for the people who matter most.
